How a Routine Breakfast Turned Into a Joyful Start to the Day

The Body Granola editorial team interviewed a woman who is trying various things with the help of her sister, a registered dietitian, in order to restore her daily routine, which was disrupted by her transfer to Tokyo and the COVID-19 pandemic.

8 Months With Body Granola: What Inspired the First Purchase?
━━ You have been using Body Granola for a long time, but how did you first find out about it?
The biggest reason I decided to try Body Granola was because I began noticing changes in my body.
After moving from my family home in Osaka to living alone in Tokyo, my daily routine fell apart and I started experiencing skin concerns. When COVID hit, I tried to overhaul my lifestyle in many different ways, but nothing seemed to stick. I eventually gave up—until last summer, when lighter clothing season arrived and I became increasingly worried about my body and skin.
I talked to my younger sister, a registered dietitian, and also did some research online. Again and again, I came across articles emphasizing the importance of gut health. When I told my sister I was curious about my own gut microbiome, she became interested as well. As we looked into it, we discovered several companies offering at-home gut microbiome tests.

━━ Why did you choose Body Granola as your main approach to improving your diet?
Because it’s incredibly easy to eat. I usually have it on busy weekday mornings. Since it doesn’t need to be heated, I can enjoy it outside or on the go without any hassle.
I also use a meal-delivery service that offers high-protein dishes to support my body composition. I’m not a fan of the taste of protein shakes, so the delivery meals help me get enough protein.

━━ Did you originally have a habit of eating granola?
My sister used to eat granola, but I didn’t—I preferred bread. Looking back, I realized I was avoiding it for no real reason. Now I genuinely enjoy it.
My favorite way to eat it is with about 100g of yogurt to add fermented foods. It’s super simple—just scoop out a quarter of a 400g tub and mix it with the granola.
There are so many yogurt varieties these days that I enjoy switching between plain, fruit-mixed, and even honey yogurt when I want a little treat. Sometimes I add kiwi or banana, and strawberries when I need a mood boost. There are endless ways to customize it, so I never get bored.

━━ Did your image of “gut health” change as you learned more?
Yes. I used to think gut health was only important for people with digestive issues. Since I never had problems with regularity, I didn’t really pay attention to it.
But after learning how significantly the gut affects the entire body, my perspective changed. Now I see gut health as an essential part of overall wellness.
Lifestyle Improvements Beyond Diet
━━Besides improving your diet, what else did you work on?
A lot of things.
First, I tried on-katsu (warming practices). I learned online that raising your body temperature can help support immunity. Since my body temperature tended to run low, I started taking longer baths and wearing fluffy socks or a stomach warmer. I’ve also been sleeping and waking up better.
Placing a warming patch between the shoulder blades warms the entire body—highly recommended.

In winter, it’s easy to stay focused on keeping warm, but in summer I tend to overcool myself. So I try to stay mindful of on-katsu throughout the year to support my metabolism.
I also started using a diet-tracking app that my sister recommended. Logging my meals helped me understand calories and nutrition better, and I stopped eating in a disorganized way.
I use a sleep-tracking app as well. When I get enough sleep, I can unlock characters in the app, so it feels like a game and keeps me motivated. As a result, my daily routine has become much more balanced.
What Didn’t Work
━━ You tried many things. Was there anything that didn’t stick?
Personal training didn’t last for me. I could handle the workouts, but having someone else control my meals took the joy out of eating. That experience made me realize that I want my meals to be a happy part of my day.
I also tried acai bowls and high-cacao chocolate, but neither became a habit. Acai bowls were too much effort to prepare and never tasted as good as the store-bought ones, and I kept forgetting to eat the chocolate. In the end, none of these stuck.
Life After Starting Body Granola
━━ What changes have you noticed since you started?
I started many habits around the same time, so I’m not sure which change led to which result—but now I can enjoy my favorite foods without guilt or discomfort. For example, I can eat plenty of bread again.
I love butter and wheat, but before, eating too much would occasionally upset my stomach. Now I can enjoy as much bread as I like and fully embrace my “bread lover” lifestyle.

━━ Eating more of your favorite bread must feel great! Anything else?
Yes—my sleep quality has improved, and I wake up feeling refreshed. I start each morning by sunbathing with my pet bird.
Before discovering Body Granola, breakfast felt like a chore. Now it’s a moment I genuinely enjoy. It tastes great, and I get a little mood boost knowing I’m doing something good for my body.
Because my mornings feel better, I’ve naturally become more active early in the day. I wake up a bit earlier, pick up coffee on my way to work, or take a walk before starting my day when I’m working from home.
These small morning rituals have made my daily life much more fulfilling.
